How Does Chlamydia Show Positive In Report When Negative In Partner?

Hello,

Last October I went to get my yearly pap. I had just begun a new relationship and had only slept with him for months before hand. I was tested for STDs after my last sexual partner and everything came out negative. When I got my pap results, they came out with abnormal cell changes. My doctor said not to worry and to just come back in 6 months or so to be retested. I did so last week, and just received news that I have chlamydia, in addition to still having abnormal cell changes but was told these are two separate things and not related with each other by the nurse I spoke with. I know I have been faithful throughout the course of my relationship and have not slept with anyone else, and I believe the same goes for my boyfriend. He has never been tested for STDS before we met or during our relationship. Wouldn't chlamydia have shown up on the first pap in October if he had given it to me beforehand? Is it possible this is a false positive result because my cells are abnormal and it could be something else? And are the two things really separate or could they be related and be something else altogether? My doctor will not take the time to discuss my worries with me, he just wants me to take the antibiotics and be done with it. Help!

Hello. Thank you for writing to us at healthcaremagic

Chlamydia is usually transmitted sexually; it is the only way one acquires it from an infected sexual partner.
The infection may remain asymptomatic in females.
Abnormal cell changes on cervical smear are significant only when they are due to Hpv infection; there is a risk of cancerous transformation.
Apart from Hpv, Chlamydia might be one of the causes of abnormal cell changes on Pap smear.
I believe if these cell changes were abnormal on both the occasions, probably the infection was missed on first occasion.
Cell changes as a result of local inflammation due to infection would resolve on treatment of infection with Oral antibiotics.
I think that is exactly the reason you doctor has planned to start you on Oral antibiotics in wake of positive chlamydia infection.
