How Can Throat Discomfort And Loss Of Voice Be Treated?

Hello. I am a 36 year old female who was intubated and in an induced coma for two weeks at the beginning of June. Although I exercise I still have muscle weakness. This I know I can improve however after all this time I still cannot speak properly. I constantly feel the need to clear my throat. I cough and continually lose my voice at work. My doctors keep telling me that my voice will return in time but I still cannot raise it or sing. I was wondering if I have permanent damage. My sister told me that while I was sedated I constantly fought the tube and it took eight attempts to extubate. I would greatly appreciate the opinion of a doctor outside my treatment. I would like someday to sing again with my daughters.

Hi dear ,
Welcome HCM,

As per your query you have throat discomfort and loss of voice. The symptoms you mention in query are pointing towards a condition known as ' SILENT REFLUX' , also known as Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) . But this condition has not prominent symptoms like heart burn. Problem like sore throat and hoarseness in voice occur . The symptoms can also occur due to upper respiratory track infection or laryngitis. I would suggest you to :
-Avoid spicy and heavy meals specially during night .
-Eat at least one hour before going to bed .
-Take a light walk after every meal .
-Take antacid like gelusil .

Consult gastroenterologist for proper diagnosis . Doctor may order certain tests like X-ray of upper respiratory track and endoscopy . Doctor may prescribe drugs like ranitidine and omeprazole. Doctor may also refer you to ENT specialist in case of throat infection.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
