How Can Sore Throat And Sinusitis Be Treated?

Hello Hope things are well with you. My father is 89, had a bad sore throat and sore teeth and jaw and sinus paid and was prescribed zpack. He is on blood pressure med. and it has been under control. Sore throat and sinus is still bad after Z med and a cough has developed. Chest xray showed nothing wrong. He has been weak and short of breath and went back to the dr. and was told his heart rate was 120. Did a ekg and was told his heart rate has been bad for a while, (can an ekg tell this?) Got meds for heartrate and it is down to 80. His normal rate was 69 I told him to get a 2nd opinion but Im worried he wont make it till monday and he refuses to go to the hospital. What do you think he should do? Thanks in advance Kurt Stirling

1. As his age is advancing, a physiological change should be kept in mind before starting treatment:

i. The nose lengthens and nasal tip begins to droop due to the weakening of the supporting cartilage which causes restriction of nasal airflow, referred to as geriatric rhinitis.

2. It could be that he is actually suffering from an upper respiratory problem [sinusitis] for which consultation with an ENT physician is essential.

PS. CT scan of the sinuses can help confirm the diagnosis.

3. It could be deduced that his symptoms and pathology has changed into chronic rhinosinusitis [dental pain, bad sore throat], so consultation with an otolaryngologist is essential

4. As shortness of breath and high heart rate was there, it could be n acute viral illness [flu] and because chest X-ray showed nothing wrong, get a flu shot [high dose vaccine] as recommended by CDC and get a second opinion regarding medical evaluation and treatment.

PS. Fu can worsen existing chronic conditions like asthma, heart disease [present]

5. Yes, EKG records the heart electrical activity and can show how fast your heart is beating, its rhythm and whether the walls in your heart are thicker than normal, so he might have some sort of Cardiomyopathy.

PS. second opinion is welcomed by a Cardiologist for Echo, stress test, Holter monitoring, till then:

- steam inhalation to help loosen thick mucus.
- regular nasal rinses.
- Avoid heavy, slimy and acidic food, curd, mustard oil, excess physical exertion, sunlight-dust areas, exposure to strong winds, day sleeping, smoking, potato, green leafy vegetables. Cold water/food
-Take old brown rice, soup of moong dal, black grapes, cow’s or goat milk, garlic, lukewarm water to drink, black pepper, dried ginger, honey.
