How Can Pain And Swelling In The Knuckle Be Treated?

I cut my knuckle opening a can about 1week ago. I have been applying poluspory daily and changing my bandaids hourly and the redness has just gotten worse. It is painful and very hot. Sometimes when I take the bandaids off there is puss. My knuckle is very swollen. I m being told not to go to ER but I m worried I should. ?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your wound in hand is infected. The presence of pus redness and swelling point toward this.

Infections in knuckle can spread to bursa in the hand which can further ascend to the forearm. So, we should take wounds in hand seriously.

I hope you had a tetanus shot post injury. At this point, you should go to the emergency and get a sterile dressing for your hand. You have to take oral antibiotics as well as anti-inflammatory drugs.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Meera Rajeev
