How Can Acne Vulgaris With Swelling, Pain And Pus Be Treated?
I have a very unusual painful pimple on my chin that is swelling on the sorrounding. When it started it was small and after I squezed it it became so painful i had to take pain killers. In the morning it had a pus and I had to squeze it and apply surgical spirit. What could be the problem Doc?
Hello. Thank you for writing to us at healthcaremagic
It is most likely a bacterial skin infection i.e a furuncle / boil Or an inflammatory acne nodule which has worsened due to squeezing and developed surrounding cellulitis. Pain and swelling suggest that there is pus inside. If I was the treating doctor I would suggest an empirical course of an Oral antibiotic to help resolve the infection. My choice of Oral antibiotics would be either cephalexin or cloxacillin, for a week. Oral antibiotics are prescription products and I suggest you to talk to your doctor for the needful. An OTC topical antibacterial e.g 2% mupirocin ointment, twice daily will also help in resolving the infection faster. An OTC pain killer e.g Ibuprofen once or twice daily can be taken for symptomatic pain relief and swelling.
