How Can Acid Reflux Along With Stomach Ache And Nausea Be Treated?

I was prescribed zantac 300 mg to take to treat some suspected acid reflux symptoms. however, it has caused a lot of stomach pain and nausea. I ve taken the pill with bread and crackers and plenty of water as online forums have recommended, and also tried taking 150 mg twice per day to see if smaller doses may help reduce problem, but to no avail. I know everyone reacts different, but are there acid reflux medications that work better for those with sensitive stomachs?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.

After having gone through the history given in your query, you seem to have not followed the proper instructions for the timing of administration of the prescribed medications Zantac.

It should be taken on an empty stomach at least one hour before the breakfast or 2-3 hours after having food.

Had I been your treating physician I would have advised to take a proton pump inhibitor like Pantoprazole along with Domperidone (to prevent reflux and nausea). To be more effective it should also be taken one an empty stomach at least one hour before breakfast for 4-6 weeks.

Beside I would also recommend to undergo Urea breath test to rule out the possibility of Helicobacter pylori infection which is sometime associated with stomach or duodenal ulcer.

You also need to have certain lifestyle changes such as avoid hot and spicy and fatty meals, alcohol, smoking, coffee, etc.

Hope this will help.
