How Can A Chronic Sleep Disorder Be Treated?

Hello. I have really big problems falling asleep, in the moment it s around 6 am (if I m lucky) when I finally close my eyes. Problem is: that s exactly the time when I need to get up for school. This started a few years ago and built slowly up. The worst about it is that I am so tired during the day that I fall asleep during school, it even happens during exams, which makes it a really big problem (It s my final year). When I m able to keep myself from falling asleep, I m usually too tired to pay attention to class. Sometimes I m able to go asleep as soon as I m home. In such cases I sleep (when my parents allow it) till the next morning. I was once asleep for over 17 hours! That s not normal. I already consulted several doctors and was in a sleep-lab for three nights. All they told me was: your sleep cycle is not right. Hadn t noticed -_- Medications and relaxation exercises don t work, I have tried everything my doctors and others told me. So, do you have any idea how I should proceed? (I m very sorry for all grammar and spelling mistakes, I m German)

Hello! Acute insomnia is a condition that everyone can experience in a lifetime. It occurs more often in a stressful situation like, for example in your case, the last year of school and final exams. Insomnia is defined as acute when the difficulty to fall asleep or to maintain sleep continue up to a month. Whilst chronic insomnia continues over a month. Some of the causes of insomnia can be psychiatric disorders such as anxiety or depression, allergies or asthma, gastrointestinal problems such as reflux, hyperthyroidisma, arthritis, chronic pain. In your case i think it's very important to maintain a very strict daily routine, make some physical activity and visit a psychiatry before thinking of any medication.
I hope i have been of help
