Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I had c. diff. about fourteen months ago as a result of long-term antibiotic use during a suspected abscess in the colon wall and surgery (yes, did have an abscess). I started taking s. boulardii at the first outbreak, stopped it after the surgery (no more antibiotics), had recurrent c. diff. and have been taking s. boulardii since. What are the chances I will have another recurrence if I stop taking s. boulardii?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
The standard treatment for C. difficile is an antibiotic. For mild to moderate infection, I usually prescribe metronidazole (Flagyl), taken by mouth. S. boulardii is a probiotic and you can continue taking it but it is secondary in treatment of C. difficile.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further
