I have had a head cold for over a week with a persistant dry cough , more so in the mornings and nights, . Although I feel the cold may be starting to clear up, I now have a discharge of brown fluid from my right nostril on bending over. I have not consulted a doctor about this, as I a normally very healthy. I am a female. 67 yrs old

Dear Concerned.,
Thanks for writing to us.
In all probabality ,you have been having acute exacerbation maxillary sinusitis. In addition you have also developed associated upper respiratory catarrh (Ac Nasopharyngitis).Due to contiguity and communication between the structures it is quite common in URTI(Upper Respiratory Tract Infections).
Most of the time diffrent strains of viruses/bacteria (streptococci to Pneumococci) cause the above symptoms.
As you are a female of 67 years, pls inform whether you do have other co-morbid conditions such as Diabetes/Hypertension/Hypothyroidism/any systemic/metabolic conditions. Keep them under strict control if you do have by diet control/medications and excercise.
Please refrain from refrigerated food/tinned food/cold beverages/smoking etc.,
The blood mixed mucous inflammatory discharge may be the brownish fluid coming out of your nostril. Please use Naphazoline type of decongestant Nasal drops /spray and T.Vit C 500 mg once a day for 03 days -05 days so that it will clear off. In addition pls take Antibiotics/Anti inflammatory/Anti allergic-Antitussives in consultation with your MD describing your H/O any allergy to any Medications. With this empirical therapy, you should improve within 05 days.
In addition , pls consult an ENT specialist to rule out intranasal polyposis/DNS/Turbinate hypertrophy which may predispose you to recurrent attacks. An X-Ray of PNS and Pus for Culture and sensitivity will aso be helpful.
Last but not the least ,after the brown fluid /discharge stops ,you may do Steam Inhalations. In the presence of brown fluid coming out Steam inhalations may precipitate Epistaxis.Excercise caution.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.,
Best Regards.,
