Have Genetic Hairfall Problem. Taken Minoxidil And Vitamins. Abnormal Thyroid Test Results. How To Proceed?

Hello Doctor,

I am a 35 years old lady and I amsuffering from hairfall for more than 10 years, genetic hairfall problem is there on both father and mother's side. 2 years ago, I consulted a dermatologist who suggested minoxidil 2% with vitamins for hair. Though I didn't hair growth, hair fall got controlled. So I am still continuing with minoxidil 5% now. Off and on hair fall was there, but volume did not reduce too much. But for the past six months, hair fall is not getting controlled and volume has drastically reduced, I took thyroid tests it came out .6 above the normal range, I took additional tests for TSH and told no need to start any medications for thyroid now. Now the state of my hair is that on the front side of my head, I have enough hair, but overall the hair volume is reduced. Aso I consulted a trichologist, who identified my problem as telogen effluvium. So doctor can you please advise me as to how I should proceed?

Hi, thanks for posting your query.

You have been taking treatment for androgenic alopecia for the last 10 years.

Now you have been diagnosed telogen effluvium. In this condition there are more hair follicles in a resting state than there should normally be.

Its causes include crash diet, high fever, iron deficiency, hypothyroidism, PCOS, surgery, severe chronic illness, severe psychological stress, certain medications etc. At times the cause is not identifiable. Your thyroid profile seems to be normal.

The main stay of treatment is minoxidil. So you may continue minoxidil and vitamins for hair and in addition take essential minerals, biotin and other supplements which promote hair growth. You may consult your doctor for the same.
Other option is mesotherapy which can be done in a clinical setting once in every 15 days.

Hope this helps you. You may write back if you have further queries in this regard.
