Has Had Enlarged Tonsils For Several Years. What Can Cure It And Are There Risks?

Hello doctor my wife has enlarged tonsils for several years now. She used to suffer from tonsillitis since she was child and now she is 30 years old. She normally suffers from tonsillitis if she consumes ice cream or very cold water and during cold weather. During tonsillitis she gets pain in the throat and headache but not other complications and the same is gone after doing gargling and taking antibiotics (in rare occasions). What is the risk and solutions to cure it. Thanking you in anticipation

Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
Tonsils are collection of lymphoid tissue in throat. Such type of collection is also present in other part of intestine like M cells and adenoids.
These lymphoid organs are basically a protective organ for our body. These tonsils gets enlarged after engulfing bacteria & viruses.
So these organs are essential for our body.
In your wife's case, there appears to be some sort of infection in tonsils which gets precipitated after cold drinks, oily food and ice cream.
She should avoid oily, ice cream, cold drinks and sour foods.
She should consult with ENT surgeon and physician.
She should take complete antibiotic course with few restriction.
If her condition don't improve with antibiotics then only surgical treatment should be considered.
Take care,
Dr. Mayank Bhargava
