Had Bumps In The Back Of Shoulder, Filled With Hard, Smelly Substance. Now Area Around It Red, Hot. Problem?
I have one of those bumps on the back of my shoulder. It is filled with a hard, smelly substance. I haven't bothered it in years and it hasn't been bothering me...until today. Now the area around it has become very red and hot. What is it? Should I go to the ER, Urgent Care or just wait until my regular doctor can take a look at it?
Hi Thanks for writing to us From the description provided, it seems you are having sebaceous cysts that have become inflammed. Sebaceous cysts are benign cysts underneath skin containing cheesy oily foul smelling discharge. Treatment at this stage would be intake of oral antibiotic and oral antiinflammatory painkiller. Warm water compresses of the lesion followed by topical antibiotic cream application would help in faster resolution..
Once the inflammation resolves, get the cysts surgically excised or removed Hope that answers your query. Take care
