Had Bilateral Myringotomy. Have Hearing Loss, Crackling Eardrum, Painful, Yellow Drainage. On Floxin Otic. Suggestions?

Hi I had a bilateral myringotomy for pressure in my ears due to patulous eustachian tubes which helped then a parotidectomy 1-2 months later on my left side. I am 6 days post op and I have significant hearing loss of the affected left ear and feel water and the ear dum keeps crackling and popping. It is uncomfortable and at times painful. The ear drains about 2-5cc every morning of clear yellow drainage. I have been on floxin otic drops since Monday. Is there anything else I can do? Are these symptoms common? Are these symptoms permanent?

Hello

Thanks for writing to us.

I had gne through your query regarding ear discharge and heaing loss, more on left side though you had myringotomy operation both sides. you are a known case of patulous eustachian tube.

Since you are using ear drop but that appears to be not effective as good quantity of discharge is still there. Keeping these things in consideration you are advice for these investigations-

(a) Culture and sensitivity of ear discharge.

(b) Audiometery.

(c) Tympanometery and stapedial reflexes.

Depending on above investigation reports and clinical findings your treatment may be alterred. Just now you may add these in your treatment-

(1) Decongestant.

(2) Steam inhalation.

I hope this will help you.

Regards.
