Got Hard Purplish Lump After Donating Blood For The First Time. Normal?

Yes, I donated whole blood at about 4:00 this PM. Waited 4 hrs and removed the bandage . Site looked okay at first with a slight amt of bleeding , then an hour later it swelled up into a hard purplish lump where the needle punctured my skin. I have ice on to now but what is the lump from? I have donated lots of times and not had this before. Also this time I almost passed out a few times at home and have had some rapid pulse episodes

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Welcome to HCM.
This is blood leaking from the vain in under the skin. A so called hematoma . It will take a few days to clear up like any other bruise, taking some Arneca may help to speed up the recovery. Your rapid pulse and faint feeling may be due to the relative lower volume of blood you now have. This generally rectifies within 6-8 hours. If it perseveres please consult a doctor. Hematoma 's may occur with puncture of the blood vessel , this does not meen it will happen every time. Applying pressure after removal of the needle will help to prevent it. I trust this is helpful.
