Gastric Reflux, Scarring On Esophagus. On Nexium. Endoscopy Done. Can I Stop Taking Nexium?

hello my name is liana and I have gastric reflux, have had two endoscopys over a period of 10years there was scaring from ulcers on the esophagus which had healed in both cases, and have been on nexium 40mg once a day for 4 1/2 years
even when I drop to 20mg which I did recently after 3 weeks all symptoms returned.Back on 40mg for last two weeks starting to settle down again now.I want to stop taking them as I feel I have been on them a long time my doctor is ok with me taking them but I don't know.I am 55 this year in good health apart from this and migraines but I don't see that I can stay on these forever and from what I read they will make reflux worse if you try and stop, any suggestions as to what to do.nexium does work but will I have a lifetime on them thanks regards liana perth australia

Hello,
Thanks for the query to H.C.M. Forum.
As diagnosis is there so , here we will discuss about the treatment line.
For how long , you have to take NEXIUM ( esomeprazole 40 mg) life long or less ?
The goal of treatment is to provide complete relief , complete cure.
You have not mentioned weight ?
alcoholic or not ?
smoking or not ?
Any way first note down the avoidance for gastric reflux.
smoking,
fatty food,
coffee,
chocolate,
alcohol,
mint,
orange juice,
tomato juice,
overeating,
fried & spiced food,
chillies,
lemon in any form,
Avoid large quantities of fluid with meals,
certain medicines which causing irritation to stomach.
These measures are only the treatment of mild and moderate degree of gastric reflux.

Other measures are weight reduction ,if in your case,
sleeping with the head of bed elevated by about 4-6 inches with the help of blocks.
avoid the factors which increases abdominal pressure as constipation, weight lifting of any type.

I have tried rebamipide 100 mg 2 tablets three times a day for at least 3-6 months and complete cure.
Hope I have answered your question .
If further any question I will help.
GOOD WISHES,
Dr. HET
