Formula Fed Baby Has Cough And Started Lose Motion. Could It Be Related To Teething?

Baby is 6 months old and is having watery or mucousy poo throughout the day for the last two days. He s eating well, seems well enough in himself but has a very red bum and coughs a bit. I m a bit concerned that although this could be teething that the poo seems to happen so often. I gave him some cooled boiled water occasionally yesterday to keep him hydrated. He is a formula fed baby. Thanks

Hi
Thanks for your query.
At the time of teething babies get diarrhea because due to gum irritation baby puts his hands and other thing in mouth repeatedly.
So nothing to worry.
Wash his hands and his toys frequently.
Maintain hydration, give oral rehydration solution sip by sip after each loose stool.
Give coconut water,baby yoghurt,vegetable soup .
Give lactobaccilus sachet for 2 to 3 days.and zinc for 14 days after consultion your pediatrician.
Apply calamine lotion 2 to 3 times over red area and keep area dry.

Watch for his activity, feeding pattern ,urine output.
In case symptoms persist get him evaluated by pediatrician.

Wishing your baby good health.
God bless.

this watery stools are mostly due to viral infections. give adequate oral rehydration solution as necessary. you can try oral zinc preparations 20 mgs per day. give him rice porridge and idly. avoid bottle feeding. if he develops signs of dehydration like dry tongue, dry eyes, excessive irritability, tiredness you have to contact the doctor immediately.

Hi,

Thanks for writing to health care magic

Cooled boiled water is not enough to hydrate in case of water stool.
You will have to give him ORS which contains salts also.

You may also give him coconut water etc.

Monitor for signs of dehydration.
They include
1. Decreased skin turgor
2. Increasing thirst.
3. Sunken eyes.
4. Irritability.
5. Drowsiness.
6. Decreasing passage of urine.

In case of further dehydration the child requires Intravenous fluids.

For the rash around the anal region Zinc containing ointment are normally prescribed by pediatricians.

Please monitor for danger signs. The danger signs are
1. Poor feeding.
2. Lethargy.
3. Loss of consciousness.
4. Fits or seizures.
