Fever, Chest Pain, Headache, Sore Throat, Neck Pain. Chest X-ray Showed Lower Lung Infiltrate. Lung Infection?

My son has not felt good for two weeks. Ran a fever for one week complained of chest hurting, headache, sore throat , neck pain . His doctor put him on an inhaler and and antiinflammatory . He is still not feeling better and the doctor took a chest x-ray and found an infiltrate in his lower lung. He is treating it as an infection in his lung. As of yesterday he has put him on an antibiotic and steroid. Does this seem correct?

An antibiotic prescribed is completely right as he has an infection there and a pneumonia.
However why has he put him on steroids is i couldnt understand.
Steroids is only indicated if the person is allergic or has asthma
