Eye sight weak in both eyes of both children. Might be genetic, deficiency of Vitamin A and D. How to rectify vision?

My grandsons s eye sight is weak. One is only 5 years now and power of one eye is 10.5 and other is 6.5. And the other grandson who is 6 and half year old now. His power is 4 of one eye and 3.5 of other eye. Pls advise what we can do. Some doctors are saying this is genetic but one specialist said it can be due to deficiency of Vitamin A and D.

Ophthalmologist 's  Response
Hi
The only option for both the age groups(5 and 61/2 yrs) is constant wearing of power glasses as continuous retinal stimulus is needed to achieve and maintain good vision in both eyes and to prevent Amblyopia( lazy eyes) in future. Donot hesitate to encourage them wearing glasses.

Until they turn to an appropriate age to handle Contact lens, it is better
-to continue glasses with
- a yearly checkup and
-a dilated retinal examination each visit (as their peripheral nervous layers are usually thin ,stretched and weak).

There are multiple procedures to correct this refractive error after the age of approximately 18 yrs/ preferably when their power stabilizes (for at least a period of 6 mths) like
-LASIK and other refractive surgeries( if their cornea has sufficient thickness)
-ICL(implantable contact lens) if their cornea does not have sufficient thickness.

And who knows by the time they are in their twenties( 15-20 yrs ) from now, some newer procedures would have emerged for such power corrections.

For all this to go smoothly in future, tell them to wear glasses throughout the day and a yearly review with your ophthalmologist should be fine.

So don't worry and give them a nutritious diet which includes greens, carrots, sweet potato, fish and Mushrooms too.take care.

Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Ram Choudhary's  Response
Hi Sainishashibala,
THIS IS UNFORTUNATE BUT TODAYS LIFE IS ERRATIC, CHILDREN ARE GLUED TO SCREENS OF TV AND COMPUTERS ALL THE TIME, SCHOOLS ARE DEAD- ONLY TEACHING CRAP IT APPEARS AS IF WE ARE FEEDING LEFT-OVER OF RAJ THROUGH THESE SO-CALLED PREMIERS EDUCATION INSTITUTE. THEY BURDEN THE CHILDHOOD WITH UN-PRACTICAL LOAD.

RESULT IS CHILD IS STUCK INDOORS AT HOME AND SCHOOL.

I WOULD SAY REASSURE CHILDREN PLAY OUTDOOR, HAVE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY ATLEAST ONE HOUR A DAY AND THE TROUBLES WILL VANISH TILL THEY CROSS TEENAGE.

YES THE PROBLEM HAS A GENETIC BASE BUT IT'S MULTIFACTORIAL AND CROOK LIFE HABITS ARE ALSO EQUALLY CONTRIBUTARY, AND WALLING THEM OFF WILL SALVAGE THE TROUBLE, ATLEAST TO ACCEPTABLE EXTENT
Take Care!
