Extreme Medial Meniscus Tear, Cysts Removed. Using Knee Braces, Ibuprofen. How Soon Surgery Is Required?

the dr. says i have an extreme medial meniscus tear and a couple of cysts that have to be removed. i have put off surgery to play golf during the summer and using a knee brace and 2 ibrupropin. this seems to take most of the soreness away and can still play golf thinking this is a good activity and was going to get it done this fall. is it important that i get it done as soon as possible and if i do will i need help from family or friends and to what extent as i live by myself and am in my 60's.

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hello

Thanks for writing to Healthcare magic,

I have studied your case,

In 60 s there will always be some meniscus tear or cyst .
as long as there is no locking episode you can postpone surgery for some days.
At 60 result of meniscus repair cant be assured in terms of pain relief.

If degeneration is more total knee replacement will give better results.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

The presence of meniscal cysts byitself indicates severe degenerative changes have occured in the joint.

A course of conservative management will help resolve the symtoms -
* activity modification by avoiding impact sports which causes more strain on the knee joint
* using an elastic compression bandage to reduce the swelling
* Ice packing to alleviate the pain
* Physiotherapy to strengthen the quadriceps muscle

Menisectomy involves removal of the loose or friable piece keeping the rest of uninvolved meniscus intact.

After menisectomy, you need a REHABILITATION programme for atleast 3 weeks. Afterwards protection to the knee is given for few more weeks in the form of a brace.

This is just for your information that degenerative changes occur fast following a menisectomy.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
