Epileptic Attacks, Recurring Episodes. Taking Eptoin, Folic Acid Tablets. Side Effects Of Medication?

Hello Doctor , I had an epileptic effect in 2011 and I was advised by a neurosurgeon to take Eptoin tablets along with folic acid tablet. I have been taking it continuously from last 1 year and continuing it till today. I want to know the side effects of this medicine , if prolonged for long time ? Is this drug safe to be continued for a long time ? Note:- I had a second similar effect in 2012 also.

Neurologist 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I appreciate your concern regarding eptoin, when used for long term in epilepsy.

Eptoin (phenytoin) is a common and old drug used in epilepsy. It is fairly safe. However, in long term use, some side effects may occur. These include

1. Thickening of gums,
2. Increased facial hair (problem only in women)
3. Imbalance while walking (due to shrinkage in cerebellum, a part of brain).

You can discuss these issues with your neurologist.

Best wishes,
