Ear Discomfort, Difficulty In Hearing. Taken Amoxicillin. Advise?

My 17 y.o. has been complaining of
ear discomfort, and difficulty hearing. Per one MD, she did not have a cerumen build up, the tympanic membrane was slightly bulging and pink. She placed her on Amoxicillin for 10days, bid. She finished that a week ago. She now is c/o pain with difficulty hearing in both ears. I thought we should see an ENT for this now. Please advise.....

Hi,
Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.
Discomfort in ear with bulging of tympanic membrane could be due to middle ear infection or due to middle ear effusion.
If it is due to otitis media with pus formation inside, it has to be drained by an ENT specialist for the drainage of pus.
I suggest you to consult the ENT specialist for further examination and to advise you an appropriate management.
Hope I have answered your query.
Regards.

ENT Specialist Dr. Sriram Nathan's  Response
hello and welcome to HCM,

I do understand your concern regarding your daughters ear discomfort

She might have been suffering from an infection of the middle which has not been resolved completely.
You can do these:
1. You may try asking for a better antibiotic like amoxycillin-clavulanate which may be indicated if the infection is severe. You may consult your doctor on this.

2.You may ask your doctor for injectable medications for faster and better symptom relief.

3. You need to get an Audiometric analysis called the PTA and impedance and get back to me or an ENT with the report

4. Do steam inhalation at least three times in a day for the next one week

take care and get well soon

regards

Dr Sriram Nathan
