Done Knee Replacement. Redness In Knee, Inflammation, Low Iron Count

My 82yr Mother had knee replacement 7.5 weeks ago, the knee wound is healed but the knee is red and inflamed every second day, She feels unwell and local doctor said she has low iron count. She can walk on this leg but it seems to just make her sick when she does. Like stirring up an infection. I have heard some people have a reaction to the stainless joint material.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Pain, fever, swelling, local warmth and other signs of inflammation after a total knee replacement suggests INFECTION unless until proved otherwise.

Metal allergy (to Nickel) is a very rare condition wherein patients tend to get pain but generally will not have swelling and other signs of inflammation.

I personally think that your mother needs a detailed evaluation to rule out the possilbility of infection.

Consult an arthroplasty for a detailed workup and management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day

General & Family Physician Dr. Het Ram Bishnoi 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for the query to H.C.M. Forum.
Redness, tender , pain, inflammation hot to touch are an indication of inflammation.
Inflammation may be due to infection ( bacterial ) or due to stainless joint ( foreign body).
In my opinion consult the treating orthopaedician and get his opinion.
Good luck.
