Does Thyroxine Has Any Side Effects ?

HI, my mother is at the age of 50 s , and she is taking thyroxin 50mg since 2 year back ,but sometime after continuous intake of thyroxine tablet for 20-30days ,she intentionally skip the tablet for 3-4 months. His docter has advised him to leave the intake of tablet when you have normal level of thyroxine in your blood. But i know that she is not taking any blood test for thyroxin level. So my question is-- does thyroxine tablet has any side effect that can show difficulty in her health if she discontinue her intake of thyroxin tablet without knowing that it may effect badly on her health!. thank you very much for your help.

Hi, welcome to HealthcareMagic.

Your mother suffers from hypothyroidism (under active thyroid), and the thyroxine tablets have been prescribed to supplement the thyroxine produced by the body. So withdrawal of thyroxine tablets will manifest as symptoms of hypothyroidism, that is, initially she may feel fatigued or weak. Her nails may become dry and brittle and she would become sensitive to cold temperatures. She may have trouble thinking clearly or develop memory problems. She may become constipated. If she discontinues thyroxine for even longer, her symptoms may become more severe, and she might experience muscle aches and weakness, weight gain or swelling of face or extremities.
I would advice her to strictly take the prescribed dose of thyroxine daily.
