Does High Blood Sugar Lead To Muscle Cramps?

My husband is type 1 diabetic, recently discovered. He has had a long list of medical problems. His blood sugar is running high, 300, with no sugar intake. (Periodically) He has calf muscle cramps in the front of the legs. His potassium has been at good levels. Is there a coorelation with high blood sugar and calf muscle cramps?

Hello,
Good day.
Yes, uncontrolled diabetes can cause muscle cramps. How ever, type 1 diabetes patients tend to develop Vitamin D deficiency and hypothyroidism. Both of these conditions can cause cramps. Cramps can also due to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. Please get a Vit D level, TFT, Serum sodium, potassium, calcium levels. Advice him to take sufficient fluids. Do stretching exercises.
Regards
Binu
