Does High BP And Heart Rate After Smoking Methamphetamine Need ER Admission?

I am 44 & had double bypass 3 years ago. I take 25mg metoprolol twice a day but had tried to ween off due to things I read on the internet. I have smoked a small amount of meth because I am always so tired with a usual heart rate of 48-50bpm. Today after smoking a small amount my bp is 163/112 with heart rate 110bpm. I immediately took 25mg metoprolol & .5mg Xanax, which I am prescribed 1mg twice a day for severe anxiety. My bp is now 156/108 with heart rate of 84bpm. Should I go to ER or have a done what was needed to correct this. I do not smoke meth regularly at all. Only maybe once a month or less. I know this sounds completely stupid of me but I am so tired of always being tired at my age & the drug helps me to get motivated & do the things I have to do. I feel normal after using like I did before my surgery. Except for today. Please help?

Hello!

Welcome on 'Ask a Doctor'!

I passed carefully through your question and would explain that meth can be really dangerous considering your past medical history.

You should know that increases the risk for a heart attack or cardiac arrhythmia in your clinical situation.

For this reason, if you have feeling chest pain or your heart rate is irregular, I would recommend going to the ER for a physical exam, a resting ECG and cardiac enzymes.

Hope to have been helpful!

Wishing good health,

Dr. Iliri
