Does Having Low Potassium Levels In The Body Indicate Any Serious Problem?

my dr, after blood test said that I am low on potasium and must take a prescription and alreadytake a prescription called pot chlor sr caps 10meg and Dr. said he will call in a stronger one. why am I being depleted ofthis, is it a sign of a major problem?
