Does Synthroid Interact With Lithium?

I read on the Synthroid.com website that certain medications like Lithium can cause the thyroid to make less thyroid hormone resulting in hypothyroidism. How then can a drug like Lithium and Synthroid work together not against each other? What kind of Sodium is used for Levothyroxine anyway? If Lithium competes with iodine, how can any hypothyroid medication help? My next question is if Lithium blocks or competes with Levothyroxine how can it possibly work? I m sorry, I don t mean to bombard you with all these question; and I apologize if I repeated. I m seeing a thyroid specialist soon, and I m scared. Last question how does Lithium work with Synthroid at all then?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Synthroid is composed of Levothyroxine, which is a synthetic thyroid hormone. There were no major interactions noted between lithium and Synthroid. Hence, kindly take the medications as prescribed and do the necessary follow-up with your doctor as advised.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
