Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does Omeprazole Interfere With Production Of Gastrin Hormone?
Guess what - my 88 year old mother is on omeprazole and I will just bet that her stomach is producing a lot of gastrin hormone due to an interference with the normal feedback mechanism played by the release of HCl via parietal cells in the stomach, ie. no HCl then no feed back to G cells producing gastrin hormone. Does that sound just a bit silly if but that motivating reason for taking omeprazole is due to the thinking or alledgedly what one is thinking that my mother has had an experience of significant pain from what was thought to be stomach acid refllux. By the way, the use of the omeprazole is almost entirely a reality of her daughter's doing which in so far as it goes seems to be more of a mindset rather than of an intellectual account of matters. I am lined up as being clearly agains't the use of the omprazole and due to a concern about the important and fundamental role which stomach acid plays for your better health - at least from digestive standpoint. Well, what do you think!
Well, it's true that Omeprazole increases the Gastrine production by interfering in the feedback mechanism of the HCl control, but in all studies this Gastrine hasn't caused any great health problem in humans. In rats it was seen an increase in the incidence of Enterochromaffin-like cells Tumors caused by hypergastrinemia, but not in humans. What I'd love to suggest is an on demand taking of Omeprazole, if she doesn't have symptoms she doesn't need it. This diminishes the adverse effects of chronic taking of Omeprazole.
