May I know how much was your last fasting blood glucose? have you ever checked HbA1c in the last 3 months? did you use another drug along with metformin and lantus? Metformin is an oral diabetes medicine that helps control blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. The best time you take metformin is with a meal. while Lantus (insulin glargine) is used to improve blood sugar control in diabetes mellitus. it s injected once daily. the oral antidiabetic agent is usually combined with other drugs. but how we choose them depends on your blood glucose and A1c. metformin can be combined with sulfonylurea (Glimepiride) or thiazolidinedione (pioglitazone), or another insulin preparations. Using metformin together with Lantus/insulin glargine may increase the risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) which the symptoms are headache, dizziness, drowsiness, nervousness, confusion, tremor, nausea, hunger, weakness, perspiration, palpitation, and rapid heartbeat. if you ever feel such like those, please discuss with your doctor. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring of your blood sugar to safely use both medications. here some tips for you: - patients with DM should keep healthy lifestyle, diet and exercise, weight control to get better blood sugar level. - please monitor you blood sugar routinely, also your blood pressure. - be aware of any complications of DM, such as eye disturbance, high BP, kidney disorder, peripheral nerve etc. - please be cautious, one of the side effect of antidiabetic drug is hypoglycemia as mentioned above. hope these can be useful for you. any decisions you take, please discuss with your treating doctor consideration for the best result. if there s anything else you need to know, we can discuss it later in HCM. take care. best regards, dr.
