Does Losartan Cause Nerve Damage In Feet And Legs?

Hi, I ve been taking Losartan Tabs for about a year now, and Diovan before that. Six months ago I was diagnosed with some nerve damage in my feet and legs. It causes me pain and burning in my feet. I do not have diabetes and it appears that I don t have any reason for this. Could the ingredients in Losartan be hard on nerves?

Hi & Welcome.
Incomplete data like age, gender, any history of trauma, etc.???

Losartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) prescribed for the treatment of hypertension.

It common side effects include: Dry cough, itching, hypotension, stomach pain, increased serum potassium level, etc. Losartan or its ingredients are less likely to cause nerve damage.

Based on the history given you seem to be suffering from peripheral neuropathy (inflammation of the nerves).

Apart from diabetes, it is most commonly caused by

1. Vitamin deficiencies. Vitamins B-1, B-6 and B-12, Vitamin E and Niacin
2. Alcoholism.
3. Infections like including Lyme disease, shingles,
4. Trauma such as from motor vehicle accidents, falls or sports injuries, can sever or damage peripheral nerves. Nerve pressure can result from having a cast or using crutches or repeating a motion such as typing many times.
5. Other diseases like kidney disease, liver disease, connective tissue disorders and an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism).

In view of the above I advise you to consult a physician for proper clinical evaluation and certain lab tests such as blood tests to detect vitamin deficiencies, diabetes, abnormal immune function and other indications of conditions that can cause peripheral neuropathy. Nerve conduction studies to detect nerve damage and MRI scans to look for herniated disks, tumors or other abnormalities.

Meanwhile you can take over the counter pain medications such as Ibuprofen and multivitamin tablets.

Medications such as Gabapentin or Pregabalin may also be prescribed by your doctor for the relief of pain.

Hope the advice given above would be useful.
