Does Levaquin Intake Cause Numbness In The Feet?

I have had numbness in my feet for many years. It started with my toes and over the years has spread to my whole foot. It has not created any problems, just noticeable numbness and cold feet at night. I just read that Levaquin can cause peripheral numbness. I had a very bad experience with this medication that put me in the hospital after just one pill with excruciating stomach pain and my muscles contracting. This was about the time the numbness started. Is there some connection? Should I be seeing someone about the numbness? My internist has not thought it was anything to worry about, but it is not normal.

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Numbness , as you mentioned, is not normal . It can be due to peripheral neuropathy which is abnormal function of the nerves.

Neuropathy is a rare reported side effects of levaquin so it is possible that there may be a link but it may be difficult to establish this at this stage.

There are also other causes of neuropathy : (1)diabetes
(2)trauma to the nerves eg if there are any changes in the spine, compressing the nerves , this can occur in arthritis
(3)liver or kidney disease
(4)exposure to toxins
(5)thyroid disease
(6)vitamin b12 or folate deficiency
(7)neurological conditions such as stroke or ms

To find out if there is another cause, you would need blood tests to find out if there are other causes such as vitamin b12 and folate levels, diabetes screening, liver or kidney disease, thyroid levels.
Neurological testing may also be needed as well.

Some of these may be done by your GP but at some point, you may need to see a neurologist.

I hope this helps
