Does Citalopram Cause Green Colored Urine?

What is your first impression when you hear that someone has just started having lime green urine? The person hasn t had any recent changes in diet/foods, eats healthfully and exercises, drinks water as her main beverage hasn t consumed any black licorice, green dyed foods or asparagus lately, and doesn t appear to have any other abnormal symptoms. Only medications are Citalopram daily and a recent completed regimen of Amoxicillen. Thanks!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.

Citalopram is unlikely to be responsible for the green colored urine.

Citalopram is a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI) used to treat depression. Its most common side effects include nausea, dry mouth, loss of appetite, tiredness, drowsiness, sweating, blurred vision, and yawning may occur.

Neither Citalopram nor Amoxicillin appear to be the cause for the green colored urine. It might be due to urinary tract infection caused by the bacteria pseudomonas.

So, I would advise him to consult your doctor to get a urine microscopy and culture and sensitivity tests.

Hope this answers your query.
