Do Tampons Cause Infection If Left Inside For Too Long?

Hi, Would you have symptoms if you left a tampon in for two weeks? I am pretty positive I took a tampon out on July 22 but not 100% sure and now I am paranoid I didn t. It was the day before the start of my period. I used tampons for the rest of the week while on my period and have not had any issues down there.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I understand your concern.

Tampons although claimed "free of impurities" are considered external subjects. If inserted inside vagina, they can be subject to infection especially if left for long periods.

When you have your monthly bleeding, it is advised to use change your tampons more often to reduce the chance for infection or irritation. Ideally, tampons should be changes every 3 to 6 hours, not exceeding 8 hours (night time).

Apply good hygienic measures when changing tampons.

Hope this answers your query.
