Do Sharp Back Pain, Hot Flashes And Sweating Need Medical Attention?

On Saturday, Monday, and this morning I had a sharp pain in my back below my scapula that lasted a very short time, maybe a minute, then I was hot and sweaty. I had no shortness of breath. My children are wanting me to go to the ER??!!! Have never had any heart issues.

Hello,

In my opinion, there is no heart issue in your case. If you are above 45 years female, these may be due to the menopausal syndrome. The back pain may be due to spinal problem, liver or gall bladder problem. I would like to give some tests so that it can be revealed what has caused these. And also I may give some pain killers for the time being so that when the results of the tests will come, any doctor can follow you up and you can start your specific treatment.

Some tests to be done are:
1. MRI of the back
2. Complete Blood Tests including RF, anti-citrullinated antibodies
3. Hormonal level of FSH, LH, Estrogen, Progesterone
4. Thyroid Function Tests (T3, T4, TSH)
5. Liver Function Tests
6. Cholangiography

Please notify if any digestive related problem present or not, burning sensation in the chest present or not, status of your menstruation (in case you are a female).

Please post the results of the tests here so that a doctor can follow you up.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dipan Samanta, General & Family Physician
