Addiction Medicine Specialist 's  Response
It's complicated. While it is a schizophrenia medicine that actively blocks areas of the brain involved in addiction, it has long term side effects that mean it shouldn't be used unless it is really necessary. Long term it permanently changes the muscle tone (TARDIVE DYSKINESIA) and that produces tics, uncontrolled movements, and spasms. Paradoxically, the medicine perhaps at higher doses blocks these motions. So, you get a withdrawal effect of the medicine on muscle movement even though it is not a withdrawal.
