Hi,
Yes. It could be an indication of peri-menopause, the preparatory phase for menopause, where you can see all sorts of menstrual disturbances ranging form early cycles, delayed cycles, inter-menstrual bleeding, irregular bleeding, spotting and so on. Yet, it is always ideal to have a proper clinical evaluation, get a pap smear, a trans-vaginal sonogram, blood counts, urinalysis and hormone assays to assess the situation and plan further management. This is needed to prevent any untoward developments in future and as a precaution at this age. Hope this helps.

OBGYN Dr. Nishikant Shrotri's  Response
Hallow Dear,

You could be very right.

In the perimenopausal period, the menstrual cycles become irregular and sometimes scantier. The intermenstrual period gradually goes on increasing and some times, the menstruation does not appear; and then you realize that you have landed in menopause.

In good old days, if the period did not appear for 6 months around the menopausal age, menopause was declared and any bleeding after that was considered as post-menopausal bleeding; now this period has been decided to be 9 months. For scientific confirmation, you may get your FSH, LH and Oestrogen levels done; which I suppose is unnecessary exercise at this age group.

So you may prepare yourself now on family, social and emotional backgrounds for this expected new phase of life around the age of 48. Have a positive outlook and you will see the conveniences of retirement from menstrual life also.

Wish you the best of retired life.
