Could Green Watery Stools With Fishy Smell Be Viral Infection?

My 7 month old son, who weight 21lbs, has had loose stools for 12 days and started with a cough/cold on day of the loose stools. We have seen the GP 3 times and have now given a stool sample. They began just as loose stools but 3 days ago increased in frequency and are green watery and sometimes just consist of orange yellow mucous. he is passing around 7 a day. He's eating and drinking which is a good thing. He has had a fever on and off of 37.9 The Dr doesnt want us to have antibiotics unless absolutley nessessary. The stools have also had a fishy smell at times. Have you seen anything like this before? do you agree with our GP and think it could be a virus?
