Could Blood Pressure Or Cholesterol Lowering Drugs Cause Low Functioning Thyroid ?

Just was diagnosed with a low functioning thyroid. TSH was 6.86. Could any of the several blood pressure and or cholesterol lowering drugs have any side effects that might lead to this problem. And, how would you feel about prescribing Levothroid (25mcg) as a supplement? Thankyou

Hi,
This is usually related. If you are having hypothryoidism your cholesterol levels can go up. If you are on a low salt diet for high BP you can be iodine deficient and may develop hypothyroididm. But most cases it could be casual associations.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help

With warm regards,

Dr Ajish TP (MD,DM)
