Chronic Pain On Right Side, Gave Birth Control Pills For Endometriosis. Any Side Effects?

I have had chronic pain on my right side for over 7 months. My current gynecologist believes that it is endometriosis, and recommended birth control pills. I am 42 years old and I am very concerned about the side effects. My doctor refused to discuss any other forms of treatment (laparoscopy or hysterectomy). I have had a colonoscopy, CT scan, 2 ultrasounds and a laparoscopy already (previous doctor did not look for endo once she found cysts on my ovaries). Is birth control pills a realistic treatment for a woman who does not want to "save" her uterus and is not comfortable with taking birth control pills due to hormonal imbalances that currently cause chronic migraines?

Hi,
A recent laproscopy for an ovarian cyst is unlikely to miss endometriosis unless the endometriosis is deep seated. The pain could be due to any cause from intestine to uterus and pelvis. However the commonest cause is appendicitis followed by muscular pain that is frequently missed as people keep on looking in the colon and so on.
If you feel that it is coming from the uterus, and you do not want to take oral contraceptives [as they do have few side effects], I suggest you consult a general surgeon, rather than a specialist for appendicitis. Also a diagnostic laparoscopy where the gynec and surgeon work together to look for a cause would be helpful.
Hysterectomy for chronic pelvic pain without any specific cause mostly fails to relieve the pain, hence first try to reach a diagnosis and hysterectomy can be scheduled if needed after the proper diagnosis is in place.
Hope this helped. Thanks for using HCM.
