Chills And Fever All Of A Sudden. Tired And Sleeps For Hours. Are These Symptoms Of Malaria?

I have a new friend...64 years old...a veteran...who told me today that on occassion he suddenly spikes a fever and gets the chills and has to curl up with blanket..it lasts for a few hours ..he shakes all over with teeth chattering....then it passes but he is very tired then sleeps for several hours...and feels hung over after these episodes....he has been having these episodes for several years......he was not in any tropical place and did not serve in vietnam....I thought maybe Malaria but I am not a doctor....when these episoded happen he is hours away from the nearest veterans clinic. Do you have any suggestions as to what could be causing these episodes ?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
From history it seems that he might be having chronic malaria giving rise to typical fever with riggers.
Go for blood for Malarial parasites, preferably when having riggers.
After report go for regular treatment of malaria.
Ok and take care.
