Child Prescribed Valparin For Seizures. Jerking Movements In Sleep After Taking Torleva, Depsonil. Solution?

Hi, my daughter Sia is 7 years old. She was born in the 32nd week(as she was suffering from intermittent tachycardia in foetus). She suffered from Gastro-Easophagul Reflux followed by Hypoglycaemia and Hypothermia when she was 20days old while travelling on a train. She took nearly 2 months to recover and get out of neo-natal hospital where she was on a ventilator for almost a month.

She recovered from all her problems and caught up on her health and general development till she was 3.5 years old. Suddenly one night when she was asleep, we observed a seizure in her. After an EEG in Hinduja Hosp in Mumbai, doctor advised observation. After a year when she was 4.5 years she had a similar seizure when asleep. On following up with another EEG and MRI, Rainbow Hosp, Hyderabad prescribed Valparin syrup twice daily.

Exactly after another year she had her 3rd episode and a year later had the 4th episode this year in Jan. her Valparin dosage was increased proportionately as per her weight during the last 3years. This year the frequency of seizures has gone up. She has had a total of 3 seizures after Jan 2013.

We have been able to video record her last seizure almost 40 days ago. Fortunately all her seizures are exactly similar and the neurologists who saw it have concluded it to be Frontal Lobe Epilepsy.

As we were not satisfied with our previous doctor's treatment, we approached an experienced Neurologist who after an EEG and watching the video, advised Tab Torleva 500mg ER once at night before sleep. He however asked us to continue Valparin 5ml twice daily. After using both for 10 days we found that our daughter has become very moody, irritable and lost her appetite. On a re-visit to the doctor, we were prescribed additionally Tab Depsonil 25mg and Syrup Nootropil. We have now been using all the above mentioned medicines for the last 30days. There have been no seizures since taking Torleva for almost 40days.

However, we have started noticing lately that our daughter has started small repetetive hand and leg movements all night long while fast asleep with a few jerks once in a while. We have been able to video record these movements too. While we are sure that she never had such movements 40 days back but we are not sure if these movements started soon after admitting Tab Torleva or after Tab Depsonil and Syp Nootropil. On searching the YouTube, it appears that her movements are similar to Myoclonic Seizures.

Now, we need help to figure out if Myoclonic Seizures are OK keeping in mind that we were dealing with FRONTAL LOBE EPILEPSY or is there a way forward for us to deal with our problems.

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

It is good that you are able to video record the events. I suggest that you revisit the neurologist and discuss the issues with him. He may like to review his diagnosis after seeing the video. As I am unable to either examine the child or review the video(s) I will not be able to give you a guidance.

I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.

Wishing your daughter an early recovery.

Regards,
