Child Has Nausea, Vomiting, Dry Heaving. Any Suggestions?
Hello, Every month of so my 9 yr old son will have a sudden bout of nausea/ vomitting, get weak/shake and pale. It just happened again - he just woke up dry heaving. He ate over 12 hours ago. The late time was 2 weeks ago - it happened in a car. Before that it was 2 months earlier at a hot stuffy RMV (he didn t throw up that time but as soon as we got him out of the building he was fine). Always an hour or so later he is fine. We went to the doctors and they said there was nothing wrong with him and since its not like every day they didnt know what to do. But this has been going on for a few yrs now and seems to be increasing in frequency just recently. Any suggestions?
Hi,
Thanks for writing in.
I think your son could probably have cyclic vomiting syndrome. Typically, triggers in children include emotional stress and excitement, eating certain foods such as chocolate or cheese, eating too much, or eating just before going to bed. Hot weather, physical exhaustion, menstruation, and motion sickness can also trigger episodes.
The next time round, the symptoms can be prevented when he is starting to get weak with drugs like ondansetron. During and after the episode, its important that he take enough fluids with electrolytes like oral rehydration solution or gatorade. Please discuss this with your paediatrician or gastroenterologist.
Hope this helps
