Child Accidentally Swallowed Baby Oil, Vomited After The Incident, Not Sure Whether Oil Was Expelled. Dangerous?

Hi, my 2 years old baby swallowed J&J baby oil. We are not sure the quantity the baby swallowed. 5 minutes after the incident, we forced the baby to vomit, so the vomiting included carrots but not sure if contained oil that was swallowed. We read that in the event baby oil entered the lounges it could be fatal causing death!! We are extremely worried. How many hours, in case baby oil was swallowed, the effect will appear? and what will be the effect like? Does it It take hours, days or weeks to have peace of mind that nothing serious happened to our baby??? We are extremely worried and I do not think we will ever be able to sleep again. Please help and enlighten us.

hi
it dr vivek
swallowing of oily liquid can lead to aspiration pneumonia .
if large quantity is aspirated it can present within few hour . but small quantity may present in 6 hour to 24 hour .
get an X ray done after 6 hour and repeat after 24 to 48 hour later if no abnormality is found .
do not force your baby to vomit . vomiting promote aspiration pneumonia .

Hi
Thanks for your query.
I understand your concern.

Symptoms depend upon how much child has ingested.
Do not induce vomiting as there are chances of aspiration leading to respiratory problems.
Monitor your baby for any difficulty in breathing.
Relax, get your child examined by pediatrician to rule out any respiratory symptoms.

Wishing your baby good health.
God bless.

Pediatrician Dr. E Venkata Ramana's  Response
Hi,
Thank you for your query,
In case of oil ingestion, forceful vomiting is not required as while vomiting it may enter in to lungs due to its stickiness and viscosity.
The main danger of oil ingestion is the development of aspiration pneumonia due to aspiration of oil into lungs while ingestion or during vomitings.
Don't be panic, as it will lead to aspiration pneumonia if oil entered in to the lungs and can be managed.
Is the child having cough? Cough may be the sign of choking or the involvement of respiratory system.
Pneumonitis will develop gradually, usually within 6 hours and manifested as cough and rapid breathing.
Consult emergency or your Pediatrician immediately for the examination and for X ray chest and further management.
Hope I have answered your query.
