Child. Nausea, Stomach Cramps, Vomiting, Slight Headache, Mild Fever, Pain In Front Of Neck. Viral Infection?

My 6 yo daughter is complaining of nausea, stomach cramps, has vomited once so far, has a slight headache, ear temp 99.8 and says her neck hurts (in the front). I would be very concerned if she was running 100+ and the back of her neck was hurting and/or stiff. Should I still be concerned and take her to the ER? Or is it possibly just a viral infection and her glands bothering her?

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is likely that she has a viral infection. Gastroenteritis is most commonly caused by a virus though it can occur with bacterial infections as well.
In bacterial infections the fever may be higher and there may be blood in the stool or vomitus.

The most important aspect of gastroenteritis is fluid management, that is making sure she does not become dehydrated.
Because she is vomiting , she should be given small amounts regularly for example a tablespoon every 5 to 10 minutes. If she tolerates this then the amount can be increased.
The best fluid to use would be pedialyte.

After a few hours she can be started on dry foods if she is tolerating the oral fluids.

She can be given paracetamol to help with the fever, it would also help with the abdominal pain.

I hope this helps
