Can The Balding Patches Due To Old Age Or Prolonged Use Of Enalapril?

I have been taking ENALAPRIL, 20 MG, for years. Over the last year when I was 80 years old (woman), I have become concerned about balding patches on the top of my head, and lots of hairs in the sink and bathtub. Are the balding patches due to my old age or the Enalapril? Thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

Enapril is rarely associated with hair loss, so it is a possible cause but other causes should also be ruled out.

Other causes of hair loss are: (1) infection of the scalp

(2) thyroid disease
(3)anemia
(4)autoimmune diseases
(5)severe physical illness or previous surgery

Physical examination of the scalp can assess for infection and blood tests can check for anemia, thyroid disease and autoimmune diseases.

If no other cause is found then the your doctor may consider a trial of discontinuing the enalapril to see if there is any change.

I hope this helps
