Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can Numbiness In Leg With Pricking Pain In Ankle After An Accident Be Sign Of Nerve Damage?
I sprained my ankle from slipping on ice. Initially it was very painful and I needed help walking. But after about an hour I was able to move and walk around on my own. The doctor showed no broken bones. I was off work for three days. But after returning to work I have a numbing sensation going up my leg along with needle like pain around my ankle. Could I have nerve damage? Is this normal?
Thank you for asking on HCM If I was your treating physician i would suggest the following: 1. Do not worry it is not nerve damage. As you were able to walk and there is no fracture and no penetrating injury, nerve damage is highly unlikely. 2. It can be due to minor nerve compression during the sprain that is fully reversible and now it is healing. 3. Keep the area warm with a bandage. 4. Use OTC anti-inflammatory cream (e.g piroxicam gel) 5. Use pain killer for symptomatic reflief ( such as diclofenac sodium)
