Can Muscle Spasms In The Jaw And Numbness On The Tongue Be Side Effects Of A Neck Injury Treatment?

I had a muscle spasm in my lower jaw on the right side yesterday evening, now my face is drooping, some numbness in my tongue and my mouth is not moving the same on both sides. Was rear ended a few weeks ago, under treatment for neck injury could this be a side effect?

Hi,

As per your complaint numbness of one side of face and lip along with droopiness and can be due to a condition is known as Facial Nerve Palsy or Bell's Palsy.

It occurs due to disturbances related to seventh cranial nerve known as Facial Nerve, that supplies muscles of the face.

It can be due to compression of the nerve with any major artery or at times tumour formation compressing the nerve.

Nerve trauma or viral infection can also be a cause.

I would suggest you consult a Neurophysician and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like MRI scan can help in diagnosis and treatment will be done accordingly.

Resolution of the cause can help in reversing the symptoms.

The medications that are steroids and antibiotics are appropriate and along with it you should also do alternate warm and cool compresses and take Vitamin Supplements.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
