Can Menopause Cause Premature Atrial Contractions?

Hello, I have been experiencing a lot of pac's and had them on and off over the years, but not bothersome at all..a few here and a few there..since november, I get them every afternoon around 3:30 and up to the time I fall asleep. I do feel them during the day, but sometimes I don't have any during the day. I have had a one month bout last march and for some reason my heart reset itself and I went back into rhythm. My questions is can menopause cause pac's? I'm 52 and have been in menopause for 2 years. My primary is saying these are benign and that is great, but they are overtaking my life. I will be seeing a cardiologist next week. Dr put me on beta blockers 50 and it hasn't made a difference. thank you.

Hi,
Welcome to HCM,
Premature atrial beats generally more common after the age of 50 years. This suggest that some underlying abnormalities in heart could be the cause, as heart diseases itself increases with age. it is said that as it increases during pregnancy also, it could be related to hormonal changes, but in my opinion, PAC's increases during pregnancy due to physiological changes in Heart not only due to hoemones, but also because of anatomical changes. Some other factors also can aggravate the frequency of PAC's, as coffee, smoking, Alcohol, Sweeteners, Glutamate in various food , stress, obesity, lack of exercises. It is good that you are going to see your cardiologist. You should expect him to do full cardiac evaluation including 24 hours Holter Monitoring. If everything comes out normal, then your Doctor will suggest you the ways to deal with these symptoms. At the same time, you can go for annual cardiac evaluation.
Wish you good health.
