Can Intake Of Motrin Cause Severe Earache With Itching?

I have a serious earache that is incredibly itchy. Went to the doctor yesterday who told me I have NO ear infection. I wouldn t know because I ve never had one. I took 800 mg of motrin my primary care prescribed me for lower back pain which I also had simultaneously with the earache. My back pain went away but my ear is worse off than it was yesterday! It kept me up the entire nite. I haven t been swimming & I don t have a toothache. Please help! :(

Hi,

It is possible that the intake of Motrin (ibuprofen) caused your earache and itching. Ibuprofen belongs to a class of medications called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which are commonly used for pain relief and reducing inflammation. However, one of the potential side effects of NSAIDs is tinnitus, which is a ringing or buzzing sound in the ears. Additionally, some people may experience ear pain or itching as a side effect of taking NSAIDs.

It is also possible that the earache and itching are unrelated to Motrin and may be caused by other factors. It could be due to an allergy, skin irritation, or other underlying conditions. They may recommend further testing or refer you to a specialist, such as an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) doctor. In the meantime, you can try using over-the-counter ear drops or pain relievers to manage your symptoms but be sure to consult with your doctor first to ensure they are safe and appropriate for you.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
