Can Insertion Of Mirena Cause Severe Pelvic Pain?

I gave birth in November via cesarean and chose Mirena for birth control. I have been experiencing some pelvic pain similar to round ligament pain since the Mirena was inserted, which was extremely painful for me. Can the Mirena be the culprit of my discomfort?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Mirena and other intrauterine devices can cause pelvic pain and bleeding. If the pain is severe it is better to get it removed and reinsert. You have to take an ultrasound to check whether it is dislodged to other regions and to rule out perforation. Consult a gynecologist and get evaluated.

Wishing you good health.

Thanks.
